The Luna Quartet is based in the Netherlands. “Specialists in quiet music” according to BBC radio 3, the quartet explores the extremes of new and experimental music.

The Luna Quartet, string quartet for contemporary music, and “specialists in quiet music” according to BBC Radio 3, has been pursuing the very latest since 2018. The quartet deliberately seeks the frayed edges of new experimental music, aware that this is where history is being made. Without reserve, the four musicians deploy their expertise and go far in pushing boundaries.
Intensive international cooperation takes place with German performance artists Kunsu Shim and Gerhard Stäbler, and British composer Frank Denyer. In 2019 The British label Another Timbre invited the Luna Quartet to record Frank Denyers 2nd String Quartet, that was composed especially for them (album The Boundaries of Intimacy, 2019). In 2019 and 2020, Luna Quartet toured with work of Denyer, Shim and Stäbler in Trier, Darmstadt, Goch and Essen. In 2022 The album LUFT.INNERES came out at Another Timbre, with works by Kunsu Shim as well as by Gerhard Stäbler, Alwynne Pritchard, Arnold Marinissen, Anton Lukoszevieze, Nicolaus A. Huber and Amnon Wolman.
In 2023, a collaboration with Scordatura Ensemble resulted in the release of the double album ‘Melodies’, a radically experimental work from the 1970s, in which Denyer explores Melody in its purest form. Denyer, who called the Luna Quartet “sensational”, has since been inspired to compose string quartet no. 3, 4 and 5, premiered at the Amsterdam based KlankKleurFestival.
In September 2024 Luna Quartet was invited to take part in SALZ/KALI, a mobile chamber opera with music by Gerhard Stäbler on texts by Peter Handke, in the Salzkammergut Festival, under auspices of the European Capital of Culture.
Based in the Netherlands, Dutch music is an important part of the quartet’s work. In 2021, Luna Quartet presented the world premiere of Ig Henneman’s 1rst string quartet ‘Outside the Rain has Stopped’ at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam, as part of ‘Composer’s Portrait: Ig Henneman 75′ (recorded also on the WIG label). This work was positively mentioned by New Yorker music critic Alex Ross, and chosen for the International Society for Contemporary Music- World Music Days 2024 to represent the Netherlands. Henneman is at present working on a 2nd string quartet for the Luna Quartet. Other projects included ‘Hand in Hand’, a work by Rozalie Hirs with singer Karen Motseri, broadcast in the ‘Vrije Geluiden Sessions’ for the television channel NPO, and works for string quartet and accordeon, by Christiaan Richter, premiered at November Music Festival 2023 and 2025 with accordeonist Vincent van Amsterdam.
Coming concerts in 2025/26 include two works composed for the Luna Quartet: a premiere tour of the “Afbuig-trilogie’ by Christiaan Richter, and a monumental work by the composer Alison Isadora called Sharing Space (with a river). In her homeland New Zealand the Whanganui River got recently recognition as a legal entity, after a 150-year legal battle by the Maori. This, and her visit to Dutch river landscapes, the ‘Uiterwaarden’ form the inspiration for her string quartet.

Het Luna Quartet, strijkkwartet voor hedendaagse muziek en “specialists in quiet music” volgens BBC Radio 3, streeft sinds 2018 naar het allernieuwste. Luna Quartet zoekt bewust de rafelranden van experimentele muziek op, vanuit het besef dat daar geschiedenis wordt geschreven. Zonder reserve zetten de musici hun expertise in en gaan ze ver in het verleggen van grenzen.
Intensieve internationale samenwerking vindt plaats met de Duitse performancecomponisten Kunsu Shim en Gerhard Stäbler. Inmiddels gaf Luna concerten met het duo op festivals in Trier, Darmstadt, Goch en Essen. Op het Britse kwaliteitslabel voor experimentele muziek Another Timbre kwam in februari 2022 het album LUFT.INNERES uit met werken van Kunsu Shim, samen met hommages aan Shim van Arnold Marinissen, Anton Lukoszevieze, Amnon Wolman, Alwynne Pritchard, Gerhard Stäbler en Nicolaus A. Huber. Gil Sansón schrijft op Tone Glow: “the result is exquisitely beautiful and highly personal” En volgensBoomkat: “in the hands of Luna String Quartet [the music is] deployed with a sort of sublime seat-edge tension […] Bit of a quiet stunner.”
In 2023 in Trier ging Shim’s nieuwe werk voor het Luna Quartet in première getiteld So Seidig so Subtil. In september 2024 trad het kwartet op in Hallstadt, Oostenrijk op uitnodiging van het Salzkammergut Festival, met een kameropera op teksten van Peter Handke en muziek van Gerhard Stäbler.
Ook met de Britse experimentele componist Frank Denyer is een langdurige samenwerking gaande. Het kwartet nam zijn String Quartet No 2 op voor de cd The Boundaries of Intimacy (Another Timbre, 2019). Recensent Massimo Ricci schreef hierover: “…an unmissable jewel […] fusing tenderness and rigor in splendid fashion”. Daarna volgden opnames voor Melodies van Denyer, een complex microtonaal werk uit de jaren ’70, in samenwerking met het Scordatura Ensemble. (Another Timbre, 2023). Frank Denyer, die het LUNA String Quartet “sensational“ noemde, componeerde in 2023/24 String Quartet No 3, No 4 and No 5. Deze zullen in première worden gebracht in het KlankKleurFestival 2025.
In september 2021, op het ‘Composer’s Portrait Ig Henneman 75’ bracht LQ de wereldpremiere van haar strijkkwartet Outside the rain has stopped, ontstaan na een periode van intensieve samenwerking. De internationaal vermaarde musicoloog Alex Ross roemde het werk in zijn blog ”The rest is Noise” en het werk werd geselecteerd voor de International Society for Contemporary Music Festival 2024. Een tweede strijkkwartet voor Luna Quartet is in voorbereiding. LQ speelde van Rozalie Hirs het werk Hand in Hand met sopraan Keren Motseri, live geregistreerd in Vrije Geluiden en van Willem Boogman de Intermezzi. Ook in première ging Christiaan Richter’s Afspiegelbreuk met accordeonist Vincent van Amsterdam, op festival November Music 2023. “In Den Bosch heb ik deze zondag licht horen breken” schreef Wijnand Schaap van Cultuurpers erover, “een ongekend ijl stuk van zwevende noten die inderdaad klonken als brekend licht dat schittering en vlekjes veroorzaakt door een beregend raam of een wetenschappelijk prisma”.
Een drieluik van Richter met nieuw werk is gepland in 2025/26, evenals een nieuw monumentaal werk van componiste Alison Isadora.
