The Luna Quartet is based in the Netherlands. “Specialists in quiet music” according to BBC radio 3, the quartet explores the extremes of new and experimental music.

The Luna Quartet, string quartet for contemporary music, and “specialists in quiet music” according to BBC Radio 3, has been pursuing the very latest since 2018. The quartet deliberately seeks the frayed edges of new experimental music, aware that this is where history is being made. Without reserve, the four musicians deploy their expertise and go far in pushing boundaries.Intensive international cooperation takes place with German performance composers Kunsu Shim and Gerhard Stäbler, and with British composer Frank Denyer.For instance, in 2019 and 2020, Luna Quartet gave concerts with their work in the Opening Festival in Trier and in Darmstadt, Goch andEssen.Commissioned by Frank Denyer, Luna Quartet recorded his second string quartet. This recording appeared in 2019 on the CD The Boundaries of Intimacy with the renowned English label Another Timbre.A second CD with the same label will be released in early 2022 in collaboration with the Scordatura ensemble: Melodies, a large-scale experimental work from the 1970s that features both the string quartet and the individual players as soloists. Denyer, who called the Luna Quartet “sensational”, is now writing a new string quartet to be recorded in 2023. Furthermore, the CD LUFT.INNERES, dedicated to Kunsu Shim and again with Another Timbre, will be released in early 2022. It contains works by Shim as well as by Arnold Marinissen, Amnon Wolman, Anton Lukoszevieze, Alwyn Pritchard, Nicolaus A. Huber and Gerhard Stäbler. In 2021, Luna Quartet gave the world premiere of Ig Henneman’s first string quartet Outside the Rain has Stopped at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. A work by Rozalie Hirs called Hand in Hand in collaboration with singer Karen Motseri was also recorded and broadcast in the Vrije Geluiden Sessies for the television channel NPO. A composer portrait of Willem Boogman took place at the Oosterkerk in Amsterdam. Next season will see collaborations with harmonium player Klaas Hoek, at Orgelpark Amsterdam, and with Vincent van Amsterdam during the November Music festival in ’s Hertogenbosch. A long-term collaboration with composer Richard Rijnvos is planned, for his project Harmonie der Sferen.

Het kwartet zoekt bewust de rafelranden van de nieuwe experimentele muziek op, vanuit het besef dat daar geschiedenis wordt geschreven. Zonder reserve zetten de vier musici hun expertise in en gaan ver in het verleggen vangrenzen.Intensieve internationale samenwerking vindt plaats met de Duitse performance-componisten Kunsu Shim en Gerhard Stäbler, en met de Britse componist Frank Denyer.Zo gaf Luna Quartet In 2019 en 2020 concerten met hun werk in het Opening Festival in Trier en in Darmstadt, Goch enEssen.In opdracht van Frank Denyer nam Luna Quartet diens tweede strijkkwartet op.
